To fill you all in on the last 30 odd years, I left HK in 79 after one term at KGV and moved to NZ with parents and sisters. I have pretty much lived in and around Hamilton , New Zealand ever since.
We left HK because my Dad left China light and power to come and work at power project/station, just north of Hamilton . With in a couple of years of being here Dad was promoted to overall manager and just like him, after high school I too became an engineer and got a job at the same place. In the mid 80’s there were huge changes in the public sector here and there were lots of redundancies. I got caught up in it all and got made redundant by my own Dad. – “Good on him” as we Kiwis say.
Having used the redundancy money to build my first house, I have pretty much stayed in engineering in different fields since then. Last year I decided to quit making other people rich and bought a business. I now run my own small civil construction company and have given my self the grand title of Managing Director. I only have two staff so at times I am also the chief tea boy and floor sweeper.
I am married to Louise- a teacher and part time marketing director in our company. She pays the bills and tries to keep us in work as well as making the tea. We have one son- Ben who is nearly eight and future All Black in the making. He is already better at rugby than I ever was. When we left HK I had played one term of rugby at KGV and thought I was quite good. I soon lost that illusion when I came here and got smashed by kids half my size. Although I am still an ardent rugby fan, (Go the Chiefs) I soon gave up playing and took up running and latter Triathlon, I haven’t done much of that in the last year either. I managed the NZ Ironman in 2003 but now just train socially to keep my clothes fitting- Just.
We live on a lifestyle block (2.5 Acres) just north of Hamilton . – 1 Cow, 3 Goats, 2 ducks, 1 dog & 1 cat. It keeps me busy at week ends, when I am not working or watching rugby.
My parents have retired in Taupo, which is really handy because Taupo is one of New Zealand ’s better Holiday spots. One of my sisters still lives in Hamilton- married with two daughters, 5 & 7 and the other lives in Melbourne - Married with a Daughter 12 and a son 9.
I got back to HK in 1995 for about a week after having spent 3 months in Europe . I wish I had had all your contacts back then, it would have been great to catch up. I guess it’s my own fault, because I am crap at keeping in contact with people- I’ll try better now -he lies. I couldn’t believe the changes, but still managed to find my way round and show Louise all the old places I lived and been to school. I don’t think BHS had changed a bit.
I am going to try to get to the reunion; I just need to convince the other director in the company that at least one of us needs a R&D trip to London .
